Public Works Commissioner Michael Finn told a news conference on Thursday that city workers removed basketball hoops at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last year over fears of the virus spreading. .

For the past four weeks, city employees have been replacing the hoops in time for spring. The announcement came as 17% of Erie County residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine according to the Department of Health.

“COVID is still here, still infecting people,” Finn said. He explained that although the courts are open for use, they are not intended for full-fledged basketball games.

“We need everyone to continue to use the courts and all the basketball facilities – or the whole park – safely,” he said. This means contactless games except with members of the same household. The courts are intended to be used for practice and shooting hoops.

The city’s tennis courts will be the next to reopen. They will be available from April 1, which is the usual schedule.
