Basketball courts

National park basketball courts a slam dunk

Homegrown Newcastle basketball players will no longer need to fight for a court like the NBA playoffs with four new playing surfaces.

Work has recently been completed on four additional basketball courts at the National Park on the corner of the park and Parry Streets in Newcastle. So there are now six new lands for everyone to enjoy.

This is part of a $10 million project at the Recreation Reserve to upgrade facilities, including sports fields around the courts.

The space used to house disused tennis courts, but now features new courts and fresh green space.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the national park is an important part of Newcastle’s recreational and sporting landscape and improvements to facilities are being made to improve the usability of the compound.

“The national park has long been used for a variety of sports and activities, and every weekend hundreds of players flock to the park to participate in passive community sports and recreational activities, so it is important that the facilities be upgraded to meet modern standards,” said Cr Nelmes.

Newcastle High Captain Nick said it was great.

“I think it’s a really good addition close to our school that we can walk and use anytime for the sport of PDHPE in lessons or competitions as well,” he said.

“It’s a great facility to have in the community and for our school, me personally, I’m definitely going to come over with my friends and take some pictures,” Newcastle High vice-captain Oscar said.

“It will encourage more children to get involved in the sport,” said Charlotte, vice-captain at Newcastle High.

A free community party will take place on the courts on Sunday April 24 between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

The National Park is one of Newcastle’s largest and oldest sports grounds and open space reserves, covering over 20 hectares and is currently home to a range of community facilities, parks and sports grounds .
