New basketball courts approved for Lakeside Park – Nelson Star

Alley-oops, treys and dunks are coming to Lakeside Park.

The city council has approved a plan by the Nelson Hoops Association to build a new basketball court in the park next to the tennis courts.

The land was recommended by staff and enthusiastically received by council on Tuesday, which also agreed to provide an in-kind contribution of up to $7,500.

Nelson Hoops president Jeremy Phelan said he thought the community would be happy to use the new courts.

“We know it’s taken a long time to get here,” Phelan said. “However, now the shovels have to hit the ground, and we have to try to figure out how we’re going to fund it all. So the real work starts now.

The total estimated cost of the project is $174,313. Phelan said he hopes to break ground this fall, but doesn’t expect the project to be completed until next year.

The city council has also agreed to work with the Nelson Italian Canadian Society to find a new home for the pétanque lanes, which will be removed to make way for basketball.

Nelson has plenty of outside field goals, but no regulation-size court. Nelson Hoops’ plan calls for a field with regulation 10-foot baskets at each end as well as the sides, along with additional fencing and lighting.
