The town of Euclid hosts the inauguration of 2 new basketball courts

EUCLID, Ohio – Two new community basketball courts will open Wednesday at Bluestone Elementary in the town of Euclid. The idea for Bluestone basketball courts started in 2018 as a way to bring young people outdoors and get involved in the community while reducing crime.

“These basketball courts are really more than the physical infrastructure that has been built now in the town of Euclid,” said Allison Lukacsy-Love. “It’s about building a community and creating mentoring programs and just providing really positive opportunities for young people in the community.

COVID-19 slowed the process down a bit, but the hoops finally increased a few weeks ago.

The project was funded by several grants with the help of residents of Euclid, Euclid’s Town Schools, and the Cuyhaoga County Board of Health. Leaders went door-to-door asking residents what kinds of neighborhood improvements could help get more people involved.

Wednesday’s grand opening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. features a dunk contest, free hot dogs from Simon’s Market and freebies from the Police Athletic League.

City leaders will also be at the grand opening to talk about the type of structural activities or programs they can now create on the courts, like recreational leagues.

When choosing the location of the courts, the city chose a well-known approach from an association called “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design”, placing the courts near an elementary school, a playground and of a daycare.

The association’s research reveals that natural and clear surveillance in an open community area helps reduce crime. Youth who participate in extracurricular activities are more likely to have better grades and higher self-esteem.
