Three Onekama basketball players earn all-conference honors

ONEKAMA – A 5-14 overall and a sixth-place finish in the tough and rowdy Northwest Conference was the end result for Onekama women’s basketball.

The year still ended on a high note for the Portagers. While state semifinalist Maple City Glen Lake and district champion Frankfort earned five of six all-conference first-team selections, the Portagers had three award-winning players for their 2021-22 season.

Senior Sophie Wisniski earned second-team honors while senior Kaylin Sam and junior Carly Bennett both earned Northwest Conference honorable mention.

Wisinski not only led Onekama with 10.2 points and 10 rebounds per game, but also earned AP All-State Honorable Mentions.

“She’s a force to be reckoned with both defensively and offensively,” Bennett said. “I am extremely proud of her. The coaches recognized what a good player she was under the basket and along the three-point line.”

Sam has struggled with injuries and health issues throughout the 2021-22 season.

“I don’t think she got the senior year she wanted, but she led by example,” Bennett said. “Even though she took care of all her (health) issues, it’s good that she got recognition for those things.”

Carly averaged 5.5 points and a team-high 3.3 assists per game in his first season as a Portagers point guard.

“She definitely handled that pressure well and did some really great things,” Tracy said of Carly. “She has knowledge of the pitch and made some incredible passes. I’m happy to have him back next year.

Four-year-old varsity players Wisinski and Sam will be graduating later this spring. Their legacy was cemented throughout the season.
They have (been) great role models for all of our young classmates, even for my own daughter (who) is only a year behind them,” Bennett said. “They respect their teammates, they respect their opponents, the referees and have always respected me at all times.

“They were never shy about not showing up for things or doing the best (effort) they could every time they were on the court, whether it was a scrum or a game or just basketball. of summer.”

The Portagers will also produce Mairin McCarthy, Maegan Hrachovina and Ellery McIssac.
