Western University basketball players win Rookie of the Year honors

The Western Mustangs guards won the Rookie of the Year award in the Western Division of Ontario University Athletics this season.

Mustangs Tyson Dunn and Maddie Picton were named top freshman men and women respectively. Dunn averaged 8.8 points per game, four rebounds and 3.8 assists for 26 steals. Picton scored 12.4 points per game in 27.2 minutes of ground time per game.

Ariane Saumure was the West’s Women’s Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team star after an OUA record 44 steals and 6.8 rebounds per game. She also scored 16.2 points per game, fourth in the league, and added 49 assists. On the men’s side, fifth-year guard Omar Shiddo claimed first-team star status.

London’s Aaron Tennant won the Ken Shields Award, given to a student athlete for outstanding contributions on and off the field, for the West Men’s Division, and Skye Barbato was the West Women’s Tracy Award recipient MacLeod for his perseverance, determination and unwavering spirit while competing through an injury-filled career.

The Western Women lost 77-58 to Brock in the West last Wednesday in St. Catharines.
